Daniels Supports Diploma Mill for Teachers

Mitch Daniels continues his efforts to privatize education--first Western Governor's, now this.  How can the governor justify bringing in shady programs that compete with his own state university system?  Shameless!

6th Largest Graduate School of Education Relocating from Illinois to Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (June 7, 2011) - American College of Education (ACE), an academic institution that provides online graduate degrees for working educators seeking advanced degrees, announced today that it will move its main campus from Chicago to Indianapolis, creating up to 40 new jobs by 2014.

Founded by a national team of education researchers and practitioners to address the advanced degree needs of in-service educators around the world, the organization will invest $1.2 million to establish its new headquarters in 12,000 square feet of space at 161 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis. American College of Education has already begun transitioning to Indiana and expects to be operational in the Hoosier State in August.

"The stable, affordable and pro-growth economic environment found in Indianapolis versus other cities plays a significant role in our ability to attract new companies. ACE is another example of a company that has recognized all Indianapolis has to offer and made the choice to relocate here. We look forward to welcoming them to our city," said Mayor Greg Ballard.

American College of Education was established in 2005, but its roots go back to 1858 through its predecessor, DePaul University. The organization offers master's degree programs in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, ESL, bilingual education, reading, math and science. In addition the College delivers professional development courses designed to address specific state and district needs.

"We believe that the state leadership and strategic vision of the state make it one of the nation's leaders in education reform. We are committed to partnering with the school districts and the state to help them achieve their learning goals for all the school children of Indiana," said Sandra J. Doran, president of ACE. "We believe that ACE can play a major collaborative role in supporting the professional educators of the state. Our vision is to continue to build the country's most comprehensive, affordable, high quality online educational environment where working teachers and school administrators can grow intellectually and enhance their classroom effectiveness and district leadership skills."

In addition to relocating many of their current staff, American College of Education will begin hiring for the 40 additional academic, administrative, support and professor positions once its move is complete in August.

"Though not the first company to choose Indiana's low-tax, business friendly environment over Illinois and other states, American College of Education's cross-border move is a significant indicator that our state has a climate welcoming to new jobs and investment," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

  1. The snide jabs at our Governor and his attempts at improving Indiana's educational environment you included in the subtitle of this article are immature and “shameless.” I concede that the quality of instruction teachers will receive from A.C.E. may not equal that of our other state universities; yet, any type of "diploma mill" that provides further instruction and equips them with better methods to educate our children is justified. Some is always greater than none.

  2. I agree with the above poster. Indeed, what worries me is your concern that A.C.E. will "compete with his own state university system." Competition, in its many capacities, breeds excellence; it is the basis for many of the institutions that make the United States so great (read: federalism, checks and balances, parts of the economy). This particularly holds true among universities, as evidenced by the competitive drive among research institutions to advance academia into the future--which is exactly where increased teacher education will lead our state.

  3. Let us not forget that the American College of Education is an ONLINE INSTITUTION. The author of this blog's immature comment that it is "shady" aside, the degrees A.C.E. will grant will not be limited to residents of Indiana, just as they were not when it was headquartered in Illinois. Whether the headquarters of this institution are located in Indiana or Punjab makes no difference; a virtual classroom has no walls. The comment that A.C.E. will steal students from Indiana's institutions of higher learning is therefore baseless. I do not know what is more "shameless:" Indiana Citizens' lack of knowledge of the basic workings of an online institution or the immaturity of his/her/their derisions of our government's plan.

  4. I want to apply for aviation degree but I have no high school diploma. I am good in study but due to some problems I am not able to complete my diploma. Diploma is the minimum requirement to apply for degree and I want to buy fake diploma so that I can apply for degree.

  5. I am a graduate of ACE. I will say right now that the program that I finished is every bit as good as the one I had for my undergraduate degree. I graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery back in 1998. At that time, the school had a reputation as being one of the tougher schools in Alabama. I am sure some may take jabs at the fact that I am a southerner and from Alabama. Still, I would say that what I learned with the ACE program is equal to or better that what is offered at traditional programs. I have learned skills that will carry over into my teaching and future as an administrator. Indiana is very lucky to have such a school joining the ranks of its other institutions.

  6. I, too, am a graduate of ACE. While I have no illusions that ACE will be competing with the Michigans, Harvards, and Stanfords of the world, it has given me a decent graduate-level education at an affordable cost. My professors always responded to me in a timely fashion, the curriculum was relevant and thorough, and I always received useful feedback on my assignments; all of these things cannot be said about all brick-and-mortar colleges.
